Thus, hegemony functions more through consent than coercion.

Gramsci emphasized that this dominance is never complete or permanent. It is always contested and subject to change. He introduced the idea of counter-hegemony, where subordinate groups develop alternative ideologies and institutions to challenge the dominant culture. For Gramsci, the role of the “organic intellectual” was crucial – individuals who emerge from the working class and help in articulating a new worldview that can confront the bourgeois hegemony.

This concept has had a profound influence on cultural studies, political theory, and sociology. It helps explain why revolutions do not occur merely due to economic crises – because ideological control can maintain stability even during times of material hardship.

In summary, Gramsci’s concept of hegemony shifted the focus from mere economic structures to the role of ideas, culture, and consent in maintaining class dominance. It provided a more complex and nuanced understanding of power, showing that ideological leadership is as important as political or economic control in sustaining the status quo.
